  • Students will create a three-dimensional book with four panels, at least 2 images, and an alliteration poem about love.
  • Students will omit any usage of the images of hearts within their compositions.
  • Students will correctly utilize bookmaking processes.
  • Students will correctly utilize design and layout techniques.  Students will correctly utilize illustration, collage, painting, and/or digital design techniques.
  • Students understand the meaning and application of alliteration within the Language Arts.
  • Students apply research and planning skills utilizing iPads/Chromebooks within the classroom.
Art History:
  • Students will recognize and interpret the idea of love, and how it is expressed, by participating in a class discussion and slide presentation of art historical pieces that interpret love in different ways.
Art Criticism:
  • Students will participate in a classroom critique of student books utilizing the Seesaw application.  Students will give feedback to other students using the guidelines of a: wish, like, question.
Aesthetics:
  • Students will apply the concept of craftsmanship to their artwork by using the correct techniques and materials in a conscientious manner.
Overview
This unit exposes students to book making processes, design and layout, and illustration techniques by creating a meaningful and motivating concept that they can relate to: Love. The students will have the opportunity to create their own book where they will make use of elements of art design, key art vocabulary, three-dimensional design, book making techniques, and illustrating techniques. The students will be working inside of a TAB (Teaching for Artistic Behavior) Classroom Studio.  The studios represent choice for the students as they work as artists.  They will have the autonomy to create their projects using any materials that best represent their vision as an artist. For instance, they may choose to work in the collage studio to create their book, the digital arts studio, the drawing studio, or the painting studio. They will also have the opportunity for reflection, critique, conferencing, and language arts learning from the writing and alliteration component of the lesson.

Art Concept(s) Vocabulary: Love, alliteration, figurative, three-dimensional, symbolism, reflection

Art making Processes and Techniques Vocabulary: Book making production, Illustration, Drawing, Layout and Design

Art Elements/Principles of Design Vocabulary: Line, Color, Shape, Form, Balance, Unity, Texture, Movement, Space, Pattern

Learning Experiences
  • Students will learn from direct instruction by following directions and steps initiated by the teacher.
  • Student will learn through discussion by participating in classroom artwork critiques, Seesaw feedback, and motivating activities.
  • Students will learn from inquiry and discovery experiences by creating an individual work of art through the process of book making, and illustration including other chosen methods like collage, painting, and digital design.
Motivation
  • The teacher will show the class a PowerPoint presentation on artworks that have interpreted love in different ways throughout history.
  • The teacher will initiate a discussion about the different types of love, student experiences with love, the feelings it evokes in us, and the symbolism we use to describe it.
  • The teacher will then transition into talking about how language, just like visual images, is a way that artists, and humans, express love.
  • The students will participate in a Seesaw activity designed for them to listen to, and read, traditional and contemporary examples of alliteration (including rap/pop/rock and roll).  The students will identify alliteration when they hear or see it, and record their results.  Discuss results.
  • The teacher will announce that the students will be designing and creating their own books with illustrations, and poems with alliteration, about love.
Introduction
  • Students begin sketching out ideas for their books. The teacher will demonstrate the book folding process, creating 4 panels, using at least 2 images, and brainstorming “L” words for alliteration.
Instruction
  • Once the students have finished their book sketches, and research for their alliteration, they will begin by folding their final book paper and constructing the contents using their studio media of choice. They should be reminded that they CAN NOT use hearts, as these are cliche symbols used for love.
  • The teacher will demonstrate aesthetically pleasing design and layout techniques. She will also demonstrate correct studio techniques for chosen media.
  • The students will finish by creating a front and back for their book; designing them, and gluing them to the outside flaps of the book.
  • The students will participate in a classroom critique of each book using the Seesaw platform.

Modifications
Accommodations will be made for individual students based on their needs.
